UNIX Users Prefer HP Over Sun

For the second year in a row, HP-UX 11i increased in UNIX user preference, and Sun Solaris declined, trailing HP-UX 11i by more than 25 percent, according to results from the Gabriel Consulting Group.

That's the average of all scores in every survey category, according to the results from Gabriel. The majority (96.08%) of UNIX users preferred HP to Sun (69.42%). Since the fourth quarter of 2007 Sun has steadily lost ground to HP when it comes to user preference.

HP says its UX product surpasses Solaris in ways that it provides advantages to IT managers trying to meet goals of business continuity, risk, avoidance, efficiency and cost reduction.

The specific technical advantages translate into a more agile, available UNIX operating environment that is simpler to manage.

The UNIX market is large, but its growth is modest, leading to fierce vendor competition. "All three vendors are on top of their game right now, with recent new product and o/s releases." Said Dan Olds, Principal Analyst at Gabriel Consulting Group.

"IBM still rules the roost on Unix technology and performance measures, but HP made a huge improvement over the past year to pull into a close second place finish on technology, and a photo-finish win on customer support criteria."
