Sun Number One In Thailand's Unix Server Market

It may not seem like a big deal for a company to top the revenue charts in one nation; there are, after all, around 193 countries in the world (depending on what definition you want to use). Still, Sun Microsystems has come out ahead in Thailand's Unix server market, and the development is worth noting.

Thailand's a country in which western companies have traditionally had a hard time establishing themselves. Even Google, the American search giant that's also succeeded in the UK, France, and a number of other areas, barely has a foothold.

So it's interesting that The Nation reported, "Sun Microsystems today announced that it topped the UNIX server market in Thailand in terms of factory revenue in 2008, according to IDC Asia/Pacific Enterprise Server Tracker . . . . The report said that Sun maintained its leadership position in terms of factory revenue, with 38.5% share in the Thailand UNIX server market in CY 2008."

And Rampa Manoonsin, Sun's managing director in Thailand, stated as a result, "Sun is committed to bringing the most innovative technologies and products to its customers. Besides the Intel Xeon processor-based systems, Sun is known for its Solaris-based UNIX servers that deliver the scalability and reliability to handle business critical applications, and present customers maximum performance and energy efficiency - a huge value in today's economy."

Sun is now in a good position to stay popular in Thailand and perhaps increase its influence throughout the rest of Asia. It's not bad news for Unix to have such a large, stable corporation behind it, either.
