Running OpenSolaris On An IBM Mainframe
Sine Nomine Associates has released an OpenSolaris distribution for IBM's System z mainframes. Some of you may remember the Sun & IBM partnership to bring Solaris to the IBM mainframe. However, I still don't see IBM's System z as a supported platform on the Solaris specs webpage.

Linux May Pose Threat To Unix Market Share
Prevailing wisdom has it that, in everyday life, something cannot spring from nothing. Plants use nutrients in the ground and energy from the sun in order to grow. Cars take gas from the pump in order to run. And Linux may be grabbing market share from Unix as it looks to become more popular.

SCO Must Pay $2.55 Million In Unix Kerfuffle
It's too bad every frivolous lawsuit doesn't wind up following this pattern. The SCO Group, which was originally pursuing Novell, has been ordered to pay the company $2.55 million for "unjust enrichment, breach of fiduciary duty, and conversion."

Beaten: Another Ridiculously Old Unix Bug
Not too long ago, we brought you news of a 25-year-old Unix flaw getting fixed. This seemed remarkable enough, only now, there's word that a 33-year-old problem has been identified and resolved. Yes, a buffer overflow bug that (if human) was nearly old enough to run for president, and certainly predates the time when computers entered the mainstream, was found by OpenBSD developer Otto Moerbeek.

Unix Group Fights Pro-OOXML Ruling
A UK High Court judge sees no problems with having Microsoft's Office Open XML (OOXML) as an international standard, and the UK's Unix and Open Systems User Group (UKUUG) isn't at all happy about this. As a result, UKUUG is doing a bit of fundraising.

Ancient BSD Unix Bug Fixed
A Unix developer recently found and fixed what was probably the world's oldest bug, and we don't mean that in the amber-encased insect sense. Instead, a 25-year-old flaw in Berkeley Software Distribution came to light.

IBM Announces Record-Setting UNIX Server
You can almost imagine someone calling ladies and gentlemen, along with boys and girls of all ages, to gather 'round; IBM recently showed off a new supercomputer and what the company called "the world's fastest UNIX server."

SCO's McBride Facing The Exit
Bankruptcy and the subsequent reorganization at SCO will mean the end of the CEO run for Darl McBride. SCO famously battled IBM and Novell in court over intellectual property in Linux, and suffered losses along with the enmity of thousands of techies who watched from the sidelines as SCO refused repeated requests to identify what parts of Linux they considered infringement.

Trying To Recover SCO Medical Manager
Recently I went out to try to recover a SCO system running Medical Manager. What I found was an old system with a DPT controller set up as a RAID 5 with three drives, but one dead.. and it had crashed, and crashed hard.

Any Hope For SCO?
SCO's stock price sank and sank and recently they've been delisted: you can't buy their stock on NASDAQ anymore (though it's hard to imagine why you would want to - you'd need a lot of faith and hope to be chasing this rabbit!).
