06.30.09 SCO Group Dodges Bankruptcy By Selling Unix Biz  By Doug CaverlyThe SCO Group has an awful reputation; it's known for being lawsuit-happy to the point of chasing after IBM, Novell, and even AutoZone and DaimlerChrysler in the recent past. But for better or for worse, SCO has escaped bankruptcy by arranging to sell its Unix business. Tom Harvey reported, "Part of the proposed deal would sell SCO's Unix software products -- which run computers for businesses -- to Gulf Capital Partners LLC, a group formed by Stephen Norris of Stephen Norris & Co. Capital Partners and other investors." So SCO will lose some ties that have perhaps been embarrassing the Unix community. Heck, sensitive Unix professionals might feel ashamed after just looking at the titles of three SCO-related UnixProNews articles: "Any Hope For SCO?" "SCO's McBride Facing The Exit," and "SCO Must Pay $2.55 Million In Unix Kerfuffle."
At the same time, though, Harvey wrote that SCO will keep "its licensing claims that are part of high-profile lawsuits," so it looks like certain matters could continue to drag out for quite a while. It's getting to the point that comparisons between SCO and some sort of undead movie monster are actually rather common. As always, we'll be sure to report whatever happens next.
