09.09.08 HP Updates Unix Operating System  By Doug Caverly Unix is continuing to march hand in hand with the biggest companies and the latest computing trends. To wit: Hewlett-Packard has announced some upgrades to its HP-UX Unix operating system with a focus on virtualization. Antone Gonsalves reports, "The HP-UX 11i V3 is available with HP's Virtual Server Environment that's been upgraded with features that boost the performance of VMs by eliminating overhead, particularly as it relates to memory and input/output."
As for some specifics, Gonsalves continues, "At the system level, the combined software can manage processors, memory, and applications together in order to shift resources to where they are most needed to increase the throughput of the machine by as much as 15% over previous generations of the product."
Car enthusiasts will kill for efficiency increases of 15 percent, so that's not a bad achievement at all.
As a result, adoption of HP's Unix operating system may increase, its reputation should improve, and the term "Unix" will be an integral part of every conversation on the subject. Unix fans can take the release as a dose of good news, then. The only slight downside to this development is that Hewlett-Packard didn't hint at what will come next or when that update might appear.
