Unix Group Fights Pro-OOXML Ruling

By Doug Caverly

A UK High Court judge sees no problems with having Microsoft's Office Open XML (OOXML) as an international standard, and the UK's Unix and Open Systems User Group (UKUUG) isn't at all happy about this. As a result, UKUUG is doing a bit of fundraising.

UKUUG plans to appeal the recent ruling; it just needs more money. A statement on the Group's site states, "UKUUG is facing a potential legal bill of some 50k GBP if it is not successful. The greatest part of our costs, if we lose, will be in paying the BSI legal costs. This stood at 24,500 GBP in mid May."

Lawyers have almost surely managed to add on a few more charges in the month since then, of course. And so UKUUG is strongly encouraging donations by either PayPal or check.

As for the reason behind all this hubbub, UKUUG explains, "OOXML is not supported by any software and the current state of DIS29500 is so poor and incomplete that implementation outside Microsoft is not possible."

No dates or other specifics have been mentioned yet in reference to the upcoming appeal. It may be that UKUUG will have to sit on its hands for a bit until the financial matters have been taken care of.
