Is The Sun Going Down?

By Chris Crum

Reports from Gartner and IDC contradict each other in whether or not Sun is still ranked the highest in the worldwide Unix server market.

IDC reports that in the second quarter, IBM's Unix server held 31% of the market's total revenue, while HP held 30% and Sun only 29.5%.

Gartner on the other hand reports that Sun is in the lead with 33% with HP at 29% and IBM trailing at 28%. So who is right? Stephen Shankland of Silicon.com reports:

The two analyst firms might not agree on the precise ranking, but they agree in the general direction: IBM has been gaining at Sun's expense. Gartner, for example, showed IBM's Unix revenue increasing 33 per cent, HP's increasing six per cent and Sun's decreasing seven per cent.

Sun prefers to steer market-watchers toward unit shipments rather than revenue, arguing that "volume begets volume" as large quantities of servers mean large numbers of customers who become candidates for future sales.

Sun does outrank both IBM and HP in terms of quantity of shipments. Even an analyst with IDC brought that up. It is clear anyway, that the competition remains strong in the Unix server market.
